Review: “Insect” – Al Newstead, Triple J
“One of the year’s most formidable debut albums, Insect is nothing like its namesake. It’s a bold, brilliant listen that’s sure to satisfy those who’ve been patiently anticipating it and deserves to be on the radar of everyone else who’s missed out on Placement thus far.” – Album review
“If Dry Cleaning, Sonic Youth and Gareth Liddiard were flatmates, this might be what you get. A poetic, prickly stand-out from a killer debut album.” – Song review, 5 stars
Review: “Insect” – Emi Dain, Triple J
“Is it normal to have a crush on a song? Like if this song was a person I would absolutely be yearning for them. 5/5.”
Review: “More A Curse” – Claire Mooney, Triple J
“It’s moody and full of buzz! Another fantastic song from the upcoming project – couldn’t be more excited. It’s shaping up to be a pretty epic one!” – 4.5 stars
American Pancake – “Placement and the squealing alt post punk dissonance of More A Curse” by Robb Donker Curtius
… So now I will dream of a future tour with Placement and Tropical Fuck Storm. They can take turns opening up for each other. Yes, I put that out into the universe.
Review: “Inertia/Heavy Lids” – Jordan Barr, Triple J
“ooooo really into this brooding track from Placement. What a journey!! It’s a little theatrical and hot as hell!!” – 4.5 stars
Rolling Stone Aus – “Best Australian Music of the Week: January 27th-February 2nd” by Sarah Downs
Adelaide post-punk/noise outfit Placement have been busy on the live front, supporting Superchunk, Quicksand, and Party Dozen. Their latest, “Inertia / Heavy Lids”, is packed with smoky rhythms, sax howls, and commanding vocals—a taste of their debut album due later this year.
CityMag – “Adelaide’s Best New Music” 30 Jan 2025
‘Inertia/Heavy Lidsʼ has the raw punk energy weʼve come to expect from the band with an experimental spin that feels fresh and exciting. The stoic delivery of lyrics from vocalist and guitarist Malia Wearn is punchy and magnetic.
Last year, the band told CityMag they took their time curating the upcoming album, which is due to be released later this year. If this track is anything to go by, itʼs worth the wait.
Farrago Magazine – “Placement Confront Monotony on Inertia/Heavy Lids” 23 Jan 2025 by Dom Lepore
Kaurna’s/Adelaide’s post-punk outfit Placement are making waves with their pulsing, brooding art rock. The five-piece experiment with twangy dissonant chords and deadpanned spoken vocals, which cumulate into hypnotic grooves.
There’s a rawness to their off-kilter rock, recalling everything from Sonic Youth to Patti Smith to Dry Cleaning. Placement’s respect for ‘90s alt-rock bands cannot be understated; they adore that sound and the fact that more of it is emerging from homegrown soil is beyond exciting.
The Music – “Placement Is Here To Tell You How To Stop Sleepwalking Through Life” 22 January 2025 by Emily Wilson
The experimental post-punk band on their latest track, and on desire and motivation.
The modern age – with its proliferation of fast-paced technologies, collapse of boundaries, and staggering expectations – can be exhausting. It can be easy, in such a pivotal, confusing era, to feel overwhelmed by inertia. To feel heavy, incapable, and to not know what exactly to do about it.
This is a sentiment that Adelaide-based post-punk outfit Placement seemed to have latched onto and creatively mined for good. Their latest single – out on all streaming platforms today – is called Intertia/Heavy Lids, and is a sonically pulsing, emotionally resonant track that collates these cyclical feelings of motivation, and the lack thereof.
“This song speaks of desire, motivation and slipping away into the sleeping reality of inertia. We may begin full of emotion, full of passion and vigour, but somewhere along the way, are we just doing what we’re doing because it’s what we have been doing? Does it still fill us, fulfil us?” says vocalist Malia. “The power of habit and ritual is strong, the inertia of daily life can propel us through a lot, past a lot. If we keep running towards the same things again and again, we should know what’s coming.”
InDaily – “Placement talk about pub rock and their debut album” 22 August 2024 by Helen Karakulak
CityMag had a pint with Adelaide rockers Placement to chat about Adelaide’s scene and got some exclusive info about their upcoming album – including its name.
Placement is a band that wouldn’t exist if a live music venue didn’t exist.
“That’s how we met,” guitarist Alex Dearman tells CityMag.
It was in 2019, and vocalist and guitarist Malia Wearn had just played a gig at the Exeter before walking to the Golden Wattle on Pirie Street to see a friend’s band play.
“Alex was there and we met and were like ‘hey, we should start a band’ and then we went from there,” Malia says.
“You turned around, I was talking about Radiohead or something and you said ‘I like Radiohead’ and now we’ve been besties for five years,” Alex says.
Review: “New Disease” – Dan Condon, Triple J
“A formidable return from one of the best emerging bands in the country. The confluence of ideas here is thrilling, and the way this short piece of music evolves throughout makes it compelling from start to finish. So damn good to have you back.” – 5 stars
ABC – “The noisy indie rock of Adelaide’s Placement has been one of 2021’s great discoveries” 24 Nov 2021 by Dan Condon
They’ve only released three songs, but the band tell us there’s plenty more to come.
At the very beginning of 2021, Kaurna Land/Adelaide five-piece indie-rock band Placement released their first single ‘Harder’.
Angular, atmospheric, propulsive and impossible to ignore, it remains one of the most exciting Australian releases of the year.
Rolling Stone Aus – “Song You Need to Know: Placement, ‘Lost Sun’” 3 Aug 2021 by Tyler Jenke
The newest signees to Endless Recordings, Adelaide’s Placement have cemented their place as purveyors of inimitable post-punk and noise.
Having first made an impact on the local scene in January of 2021 with the release of their single “Harder”, Adelaide outfit Placement have proven their commitment to delivering immersive post-punk compositions with the release of their latest single, “Lost Sun”.
